P.E.

Our vision:

The PE department at Orsett Heath Academy aims to deliver consistently excellent opportunities for all in curricular and extra curricular PE, in order to foster a lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity.

Our ethos involves delivering a holistic curriculum, which is there to engage students of all abilities and interests across both key stages so they are able to grow from children to young adults through physical education and sport. To do this, we follow the “Head, Heart , Hand” model. This allows students to develop in three key areas that will either allow them to understand the benefits of physical exercise for a healthy active lifestyle or lead them towards a career path in our subject.

Head:

The “Head” element of our curriculum is the subject knowledge we aim to deliver to our students; this will develop throughout Key Stage 3 ready for Key Stage 4. Students will learn about the anatomy of the human body, applying this to how the human body works during physical activity and sport. Additionally, pupils will gain an understanding of the different components of fitness, as well as the types of exercise that can be beneficial to a healthy active lifestyle. This is in addition to the variety of sports the students will be learning about in lessons.

Heart:

The “Heart” element focuses on the affective side of sport and truly supports students in developing confidence as an individual, as well as in a sporting capacity. We aim to emphasise the importance of leadership, teamwork and effective and positive communication, as well the significance of enjoying physical exercise.

Hand:

Finally, our “Hand” element focuses on developing physical literacy throughout Key Stage 3 and competence in producing skills through a games-based approach to promote participation and enjoyment for all during practical lessons. In addition to this, we will incorporate Athletics lessons with both track and field events at the Blackshots arena.

Current sports on our curriculum include:

Football, Rugby, Netball, Handball, Gymnastics, Dance, Table Tennis, Lacrosse, OAA, Athletics, Striking and Fielding games, General Fitness, Badminton and Basketball.

Our ethos is shared across the SWECET trust and we aim to promote further participation in physical exercise and sport, not only in curriculum but in extra curricular activities as well. These extra curricular activities will cover a broad range of both team and individual sports, again developing our students with our “Head, Heart, Hand” model. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to represent Orsett Heath Academy in local, regional, and sometimes national competitions, across a broad range of different sports.

All mentioned will be appropriately sequenced throughout Key Stage 3 to develop the students in the most effective way possible, whilst maintaining enjoyment and a keen interest in being physically active. This can prepare the students for Key Stage 4, where they will have the choice to progress their education to GCSE or BTEC courses in anticipation of a career in Physical Education and Sport or they can focus on the enjoyment and health benefits of P.E in core practical lessons.
